Road Categories<br />

Highway 401 is an example<br />

<strong>of</strong> a freeway.<br />

Bayly Street, Brock Road,<br />

Highway 7 and Taunton<br />

Road are examples <strong>of</strong> Type<br />

A arterial roads.<br />

Kingston Road, and<br />

Liverpool Road between<br />

Highway 401 and Finch<br />

Avenue are examples <strong>of</strong><br />

Type B arterial roads.<br />

<strong>Pickering</strong> Parkway and<br />

Glenanna Road are<br />

examples <strong>of</strong> Type C arterial<br />

roads.<br />

Major Oaks Drive,<br />

Oklahoma Drive and<br />

Amberlea Road are<br />

examples <strong>of</strong> Collector<br />

Roads.<br />

4.10 <strong>City</strong> Council shall,<br />

(a) recognize Freeways as controlled access<br />

roads designed to carry the highest volumes<br />

<strong>of</strong> traffic at high speeds within and beyond<br />

the <strong>City</strong> and Region;<br />

(b) recognize Type A, Type B and Type C<br />

Arterial Roads as described in the Durham<br />

Regional <strong>Official</strong> <strong>Plan</strong>, wherein,<br />

(i) Type A Arterial Roads: are the highest<br />

order arterial road; are designed to carry<br />

large volumes <strong>of</strong> traffic at moderate to<br />

high speeds, over relatively long<br />

distances; have access restrictions; and<br />

generally have a right-<strong>of</strong>-way width<br />

ranging from 36 to 50 metres;<br />

(ii) Type B Arterial Roads: are designed to<br />

carry moderate volumes <strong>of</strong> traffic at<br />

moderate speeds, within a municipality;<br />

have some access restrictions; and<br />

generally have a right-<strong>of</strong>-way width<br />

ranging from 30 to 36 metres; and<br />

(iii) Type C Arterial Roads: are designed to<br />

carry lower volumes <strong>of</strong> traffic, at slower<br />

speeds; provide access to properties;<br />

and generally have a right-<strong>of</strong>-way width<br />

ranging from 26 to 30 metres;<br />

(c) recognize the following municipal road<br />

categories, wherein,<br />

(i) Collector Roads: generally provide access<br />

to individual properties, to local roads, to<br />

other collector roads and to Type C<br />

arterial roads; carry greater volumes <strong>of</strong><br />

traffic than local roads, including<br />

automobiles, pedestrians, bicycles and<br />

transit; and generally have a right-<strong>of</strong>-way<br />

width ranging from 20 to 22 metres; and<br />

(ii) Local Roads: generally provide access to<br />

individual properties, to other local roads<br />

and to collector roads; carry local traffic;<br />

and generally have a right-<strong>of</strong>-way <strong>of</strong> up to<br />

20 metres, with the exception <strong>of</strong> local<br />

roads serving industrial properties which<br />

may have a right-<strong>of</strong>-way width <strong>of</strong> up to 23<br />

metres.<br />
