CARE IN ASSEMBLING RIFLES.<br />

With reference to <strong>Navy</strong> Order No. 462 of 1921, it is notified for information<br />

that the woodwork of rifles manufactured at the Commonwealth Small<br />

Arms Factory, Lithgow, is Queensland maple, which is not so suitable as<br />

walnut, which is the wood used for rifles supplied to ships of the <strong>Royal</strong> <strong>Navy</strong>.<br />

If, however, adequate care is exercised in the stripping, assembling, and use<br />

of the rifles, the wood will keep in good condition.<br />

2. If any case occurs of damage to the woodwork of a rifle, a report is to<br />

be furnished stating in detail how the damage occurred.<br />

DEFERRED PAY CLAIMS.<br />

With regard to Finance Authorities issued for payment of Deferred Pay<br />

to personnel serving in H.M.A. Ships, the following action should be taken<br />

if, on the receipt of the authority, the payee has been transferred to another<br />

ship :—<br />

The claim should be forwarded for payment to the ship to which<br />

the rating has been transferred, under cover of a memorandum.<br />

If only one payment is included in the Finance Authority, the<br />

original authority should be sent forward as an enclosure to the<br />

memorandum.<br />

If more than one payment is shown on the Finance Authority, an<br />

extract should be made therefrom, and the extract sent forward with<br />

the memorandum.<br />

In all such cases the Director of <strong>Navy</strong> Accounts should be<br />

immediately advised of the ship to which the authority is transferred.<br />

2. This procedure does not, however, apply in the case of -personnel<br />

reverting to the United Kingdom. In such instances the claim and Finance<br />

Authority should be returned to the Director of <strong>Navy</strong> Accounts, who will<br />

arrange for payment to be made in London.<br />

4. The following paragraphs are added at the end of the article :—<br />

" 18. In cases where a letter or posted packet (other than registered<br />

matter) on which a charge is levied has to be re-directed,<br />

e.g., on account of the addressee having left the ship or the letter<br />

having been wrongly addressed, an extract of the list received is<br />

to be sent to the proper ship and a suitable note made on the list<br />

received with the mail."<br />

" 19. In the event of an addressee refusing to pay the charge<br />

for insufficiently pre-paid postage, &c, the letter or package is<br />

not to be delivered to him but should be forwarded to the Deputy<br />

P.M.G., Melbourne, accompanied by a report, and a notation<br />

that this has been done is to be made against the entry on the list<br />

relating to the letter or package concerned."<br />

INSUFFICD3NTLY PRE-PAID MATL MATTER.<br />

Article 105 of Consolidated <strong>Navy</strong> Orders 1911-1920 is amended as follows<br />

:—<br />

1. Paragraph 2, line 4, omit " Williamstown " and insert in lieu<br />

" Westernport."<br />

2. Paragraph 9, lines 6 and 7, omit the words " quarterly, to the<br />

Secretary, General Post Office, Melbourne " and insert in lieu the words<br />

" as early as practicable to the Deputy P.M.G., Melbourne."<br />
