PAYMENT OF ALLOWANCE FOR THE PERFORMANCE OF HIGHER<br />

DUTIES—PERMANENT CIVIL OFFICERS (OFFICE STAFF).<br />

Amendment (3), promulgated in <strong>Navy</strong> Order 520/1921, is cancelled, and<br />

the following substituted :—<br />

" Paragraph 8 is cancelled and the following substituted, with effect<br />

from 1st April, 1921, except as regards that portion after the words<br />

' higher duties' in the fourth line of sub-paragraph (b), which will take effect<br />

from 3rd December, 1921—<br />

An officer who is in receipt of an allowance for the performance of<br />

higher duties shall have his allowance suspended during any period of<br />

cessation of performances of the higher duties, except as provided hereunder<br />

:—<br />

(a) Where an officer in receipt of the allowance has performed the<br />

higher duties for twelve months continuously, and is granted<br />

sick leave for a period not exceeding two weeks in any twelve<br />

months, he is to receive the allowance whilst on sick leave,<br />

provided that on returning from leave he again takes up the<br />

higher duties ; also provided that any absence, except on<br />

recreation leave, emergency leave, or leave granted to an<br />

officer under Commonwealth Public Service Regulation 88<br />

to enable him to fulfil the course of training prescribed by the<br />

Defence Act, during the period of twelve months from the<br />

date of taking up the higher duties, should not be counted<br />

in arriving at the date on which the officer becomes eligible<br />

for sick leave of absence at the higher rate.<br />

(b) Where an officer in receipt of the allowance is granted recreation<br />

leave or emergency leave, payment of the allowance will be<br />

continued during the officer's absence, provided that on returning<br />

from leave he again takes up the higher duties.<br />

Where an officer in receipt of the allowance is granted leave<br />

with pay under Commonwealth Public Service Regulation 88<br />

to enable him to fulfil the course of training prescribed by the<br />

Defence Act, payment of the allowance will be continued<br />

during the officer's absence, and if his pay on account of<br />

Naval or Military training is less than his ordinary civil pay,<br />

he will be entitled to receive the difference plus allowance,<br />

provided that payment of the higher duty allowance should<br />

not be continued beyond the date the officer would have<br />

ceased to perform the higher duties had he not been absent."<br />
