Basic Law Enforcement Training<br />

Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed <strong>to</strong> give students<br />

essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement<br />

officers with state, county or municipal governments, or with private<br />

enterprise.<br />

This program utilizes State-Commission-mandated <strong>to</strong>pics and methods of<br />

instruction. General subjects include, but are not limited <strong>to</strong>, criminal,<br />

juvenile, civil, traffic, and alcoholic beverage laws; investigative, patrol,<br />

cus<strong>to</strong>dy, and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics and<br />

community relations. Candidates for BLET must be at least 20 years of age,<br />

have a high school diploma or GED, possess a valid North Carolina<br />

opera<strong>to</strong>r’s license and have no felony convictions.<br />

Students must successfully complete all units of study and pass the<br />

certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice<br />

Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina<br />

Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission <strong>to</strong> receive a<br />

certificate.<br />

Students successfully completing a Basic Law Enforcement Training course<br />

accredited by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training<br />

Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and<br />

Training Standards Commission will receive credit for CJC-131, Criminal<br />

Law, <strong>to</strong>wards the Associate in Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice<br />

Technology. Students must have successfully passed the Commissions’<br />

comprehensive certification examination. Students must have completed<br />

Basic Law Enforcement Training since 1985.
