musculoskeletal areas with case presentations utilized for special problems situations.<br />

Upon completion, students should be able <strong>to</strong> recognize and manage trauma situations<br />

based upon patient impressions and should meet requirements of BTLS or PHTLS<br />

EMS-270 Life Span Emergencies 3 (2-2) S<br />

Prerequisites: EMS-120, EMS-130, EMS-131<br />

Corequisites: None<br />

This course, required for paramedic certification, covers medical/ethical/legal issues<br />

and the spectrum of age-specific emergencies from conception through death. Topics<br />

include gynecological, obstetrical, neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric emergencies and<br />

pharmacological therapeutics. Upon completion, students should be able <strong>to</strong> recognize<br />

and treat age-specific emergencies and certify at the Pediatric Advanced Life Support<br />

EMS-280 EMS Bridging Course 3 (2-2) FS SS<br />

Prerequisites: None<br />

Corequisites: None<br />

This course is designed <strong>to</strong> bridge the knowledge gained in a continuing education<br />

paramedic program with the knowledge gained in an EMS curriculum program.<br />

Topics include patient assessment, documentation, twelve-lead ECG analysis,<br />

thrombolytic agents, cardiac pacing, and advanced pharmacology. Upon completion,<br />

students should be able <strong>to</strong> perform advanced patient assessment documentation using<br />

the problem-oriented medical record format and manage complicated patients. (1997<br />

EMS-285 EMS Caps<strong>to</strong>ne 2 (1-3) S<br />

Prerequisites: EMS-220, EMS-250, EMS-260<br />

Corequisites: None<br />

This course provides an opportunity <strong>to</strong> demonstrate problem-solving skills as a team<br />

leader in simulated patient scenarios and is required for paramedic certification.<br />

Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, integration of didactic and psychomo<strong>to</strong>r<br />

skills, and effective performance in simulated emergency situations. Upon<br />

completion, students should be able <strong>to</strong> recognize and appropriately respond <strong>to</strong> a<br />

variety of EMS-related events. (1997 SU)<br />

Initial student placement in developmental courses is based on individual college<br />

placement testing policies and procedures. Students should begin developmental<br />

course work at the appropriate level indicated by that college’s placement test and<br />

complete the entire course series as assigned.<br />

ENG-070 Basic Language Skills 3 (2-2) AND<br />

Prerequisites: None<br />

Corequisites: RED-070<br />

This course introduces the fundamentals of standard written English. Emphasis is<br />

placed on effective word choice, recognition of sentences and sentence parts, and<br />

basic usage. Upon completion, students should be able <strong>to</strong> generate sentences that<br />

clearly express ideas. This course does not satisfy the developmental reading and<br />

writing prerequisite for ENG-111 or ENG-111A. (2000 FA)
