This course introduces and compares drug delivery systems. Topics include <strong>to</strong>pical<br />

and oral medications, use and abuse of drugs, irrigating solutions, and format for<br />

prescription writing. Upon completion, the students should administer and record<br />

This course introduces basic clinical procedures for the ophthalmic practice. Topics<br />

include telephone triage and basic procedures commonly used in the preliminary<br />

examination of patients. Upon completion, the student should be able <strong>to</strong> perform<br />

basic administrative tasks, assist with minor office surgery, and perform procedures<br />

This course introduces ophthalmic patient-care procedures. Topics include<br />

interpersonal skills with patients, work and legal ethics, confidentiality, clinical<br />

appearance, and performance. Upon completion, the student will determine<br />

equipment and instruments associated with patient examination, observation of<br />

examination techniques, assigned examination lanes <strong>to</strong> maintain, basic procedures for<br />

This course introduces more advanced clinical procedures for the ophthalmic<br />

practice. Topics include coding and testing associated with the treatment of<br />

glaucoma, cataracts and refractive errors. Upon completion, the student should<br />

understand coding for ophthalmic procedures and perform au<strong>to</strong>mated perimetry, A<br />

scan biometry, kera<strong>to</strong>metry and pachymetry. (2012 SP)<br />

OPH-108 Ophthalmic Patient Care 2 (2-0-0) S<br />

This course is an overview of the care of the opthalmic patient. Topics include<br />

systemic diseases in the eye, review of first aid, emergency equipment and supplies,<br />

infection control, identification and sterilization of minor surgical equipment, and<br />

aseptic technique. Upon completion, the students should be able <strong>to</strong> apply these<br />

principles in their interactions with patients. (2012 SP)
