This course uses whole language <strong>to</strong> develop proficiency in basic reading and writing.<br />

Emphasis is placed on increasing vocabulary, developing comprehension skills, and<br />

improving grammar. Upon completion, students should be able <strong>to</strong> understand and<br />

create grammatically and syntactically correct sentences. This course integrates<br />

ENG-070 and RED-070. This course does not satisfy the developmental reading and<br />

writing prerequisite for ENG-111 or ENG-111A. (1997 SU)<br />

ENG-085 Reading and Writing Foundations 5 (5-0) FS SS<br />

Prerequisites: ENG-070, minimum grade C, and RED-070, minimum grade<br />

C; or ENG-075, minimum grade C<br />

Corequisites: None<br />

This course uses whole language <strong>to</strong> develop proficiency in reading and writing for<br />

college. Emphasis is placed on applying analytical and critical reading skills <strong>to</strong> a<br />

variety of texts and on introducing the writing process. Upon completion, students<br />

should be able <strong>to</strong> recognize and use various patterns of test organization and compose<br />

effective paragraphs. This course integrates ENG-080 and RED-080 and satisfies the<br />

developmental reading and writing prerequisites for ENG-102 but not for ENG-111.<br />

Prerequisites: ENG-085, minimum grade C<br />

Corequisites: None<br />

This course uses whole language <strong>to</strong> strengthen proficiency in reading and writing for<br />

college. Emphasis is placed on applying critical reading skills <strong>to</strong> narrative and<br />

exposi<strong>to</strong>ry texts and on using the writing process. Upon completion, students should<br />

be able <strong>to</strong> comprehend, analyze, and evaluate college texts and <strong>to</strong> compose essays in<br />

preparation for college writing. This course integrates ENG-090/090A and RED-090<br />

and satisfies the developmental reading and writing prerequisites for ENG-111.<br />

ENG-102 Applied Communications II 3 (3-0) AND<br />

Prerequisites: ENG-085, minimum grade C<br />

Corequisites: None<br />

This course is designed <strong>to</strong> enhance writing and speaking skills for the workplace.<br />

Emphasis is placed on generating short writings such as job application documents,<br />

memoranda, and reports and developing interpersonal communication skills with<br />

employees and the public. Upon completion, students should be able <strong>to</strong> prepare<br />

effective, short, and job-related written and oral communications. This course is<br />

designed primarily for the Au<strong>to</strong>body Repair Diploma. (1997 SU)<br />

ENG-111 Exposi<strong>to</strong>ry Writing 3 (3-0) FS SS<br />

Prerequisites: ENG-095, minimum grade C<br />

Corequisites: None<br />

This course is the required first course in a series of two designed <strong>to</strong> develop the<br />

ability <strong>to</strong> produce clear exposi<strong>to</strong>ry prose. Emphasis is placed on the writing process<br />

including audience analysis, <strong>to</strong>pic selection, thesis support and development, editing,<br />

and revision. Upon completion, students should be able <strong>to</strong> produce unified, coherent,<br />

well-developed essays using standard written English. This course has been approved
