This course covers electronic principles, theories, and concepts. Emphasis is placed<br />

on those items covered in the Certified Electronic Technician examination. Upon<br />

completion, students should be able <strong>to</strong> demonstrate competence in electronics and be<br />

EMS Emergency Medical Science<br />

EMS-110 EMT-Basic 7 (5-6) FS<br />

Prerequisites: None<br />

Corequisites: None<br />

This course introduces basic emergency medical care. Topics include prepara<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />

airway, patient assessment, medical emergencies, trauma, infants and children, and<br />

operations. Upon completion, students should be able <strong>to</strong> demonstrate the knowledge<br />

and skills necessary <strong>to</strong> achieve North Carolina State or National Registry EMT-Basic<br />

EMS-120 Intermediate Interventions 3 (2-3) S<br />

Prerequisites: EMS-110<br />

Corequisites: EMS-121, EMS-130, EMS-131<br />

This course is designed <strong>to</strong> provide the necessary information for interventions<br />

appropriate <strong>to</strong> the EMT-Intermediate and is required for intermediate certification.<br />

Topics include au<strong>to</strong>mated external defibrillation, basic cardiac electrophysiology,<br />

intravenous therapy, venipuncture, acid-base balance, and fluids and electrolytes.<br />

Upon completion, students should be able <strong>to</strong> properly establish an IV line, obtain<br />

venous blood, utilize AEDs, and correctly interpret arterial blood gases. (2002 FA)<br />

EMS-121 EMS Clinical Practicum I 2 (0-6) S<br />

Prerequisites: EMS-110<br />

Corequisites: EMS-120, EMS-130, EMS-131<br />

This course is the initial hospital and field internship and is required for intermediate<br />

and paramedic certification. Emphasis is placed on intermediate-level care. Upon<br />

completion, students should be able <strong>to</strong> demonstrate competence with intermediatelevel<br />

EMS-130 Pharmacology I for EMS 2 (1-3) S<br />

Prerequisites: EMS-110<br />

Corequisites: EMS-120, EMS-121, EMS-131, MAT-060<br />

This course introduces the fundamental principles of pharmacology and medication<br />

administration and is required for intermediate and paramedic certification. Topics<br />

include terminology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, weights, measures, drug<br />

calculations, legislation, and administration routes. Upon completion, students should<br />

be able <strong>to</strong> accurately calculate drug dosages, properly administer medications, and<br />

demonstrate general knowledge of pharmacology. (2000 FA)<br />
