program is known as Chapter 33.<br />

Reserve Education Assistance Program (REAP)<br />

REAP supports a member of a reserve component who served on active duty<br />

for a contingency operation after September 11, 2001, and who served at<br />

least 90 or more consecutive days. Benefits are paid at a percentage of the<br />

Chapter 30 pay rate based on the time served and the rate during the year the<br />

educational training occurred. See the VA certifying official or<br />

www.gibill.va.gov for more information on the application process and rates<br />

of pay for REAP.<br />

Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)<br />

VEAP is available if the student first entered active duty between January 1,<br />

1977, and June 30, 1985, and elected <strong>to</strong> make contributions from his/her<br />

military pay <strong>to</strong> participate in this education benefit program. With VEAP,<br />

the Government matches contributions on a $2 for $1 basis. This benefit may<br />

be used for approved degree and certificate programs at SCC. Remedial,<br />

deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain<br />

circumstances.<br />

Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance<br />

Program (DEA)<br />

DEA provides education and training opportunities <strong>to</strong> eligible dependents of<br />

veterans who are permanently and <strong>to</strong>tally disabled due <strong>to</strong> a service-related<br />

condition or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service-related<br />

condition. The program offers up <strong>to</strong> 45 months of education benefits. These<br />

benefits may be used for approved degree and certificate programs at SCC.<br />

Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain<br />

circumstances.<br />

VA Work-Study Program<br />

Work-study is available on a limited basis <strong>to</strong> students receiving VA<br />

education benefits and attending school at least three-quarter time. An<br />

individual working under this program may work at the college’s VA office<br />

or at approved state employment offices. Work-study is paid at the minimum<br />

wage rate, and students can work up <strong>to</strong> 25 hours a week.<br />

NC National Guard Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)<br />

TAP is available <strong>to</strong> any student who is a member of the North Carolina<br />

National Guard and pays tuition/fees. Students who wish <strong>to</strong> apply for the<br />

benefit must do so through the website www.goarmyed.com.
