<strong>College</strong> General Education Requirements<br />

<strong>Sandhills</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> faculty has identified four primary goals of<br />

general education: social and personal responsibility, communication,<br />

critical thinking, and technology literacy. For each of these four goals,<br />

competencies have been developed <strong>to</strong> assess student attainment. Course<br />

embedded assessment is used <strong>to</strong> directly measure the four competencies in<br />

the appropriate general education courses. The general education courses<br />

used for assessment are selected from various disciplines (humanities,<br />

science, mathematics, etc.) <strong>to</strong> capture a variety of ways <strong>to</strong> assess each of the<br />

core general education goals. Standard rubrics are used <strong>to</strong> assess student<br />

attainment of competencies.<br />

Social and Personal Responsibility<br />

Social and Personal Responsibility is the ability <strong>to</strong> analyze similarities and<br />

differences in human experiences and perspectives, exhibit a greater<br />

awareness of ethical and social concerns, and demonstrate respect for self<br />

and others.<br />

Demonstrated competencies:<br />

Students will demonstrate respect for self and others by working in<br />

groups.<br />

Students will analyze ethical or social concerns.<br />

Communication<br />

Communication is the ability <strong>to</strong> apply college-level language skills<br />

individually and collaboratively <strong>to</strong> discover, organize, and convey<br />

information, ideas, and arguments in a manner appropriate <strong>to</strong> audience and<br />

purpose.<br />

Demonstrated competencies:<br />

Students will demonstrate college-level language skills.<br />

Students will create a summary of information using disciplinespecific<br />

material.<br />

Critical Thinking<br />

Critical Thinking is the ability <strong>to</strong> use appropriate inquiry <strong>to</strong> reach a reasoned<br />

conclusion.<br />

Demonstrated competencies:<br />

Students will create a summary of information using disciplinespecific<br />

material.<br />

Students will use evidence, logic, and organization <strong>to</strong> defend a<br />

position.
