Planning Agenda<br />

The interim Dean of Institutional Planning and Effectiveness will collaborate with the<br />

Student Learning Outcomes and Program Planning and Assessment Committees to review<br />

the current assessment processes of all courses and programs, including those courses<br />

delivered by Distance Education modalities. This review will identify additional research<br />

tools and data that may be integrated into the regular program review of all courses and<br />

programs. The process and timeline will be determined during the strategic planning process<br />

that will be completed by June 2013.<br />

II.A.2.a<br />

The institution uses established procedures to design, identify learning outcomes for,<br />

approve, administer, deliver, and evaluate courses and programs. The institution<br />

recognizes the central role of its faculty for establishing quality and improving<br />

instructional courses and programs.<br />

Descriptive Summary<br />

<strong>Hartnell</strong>‘s Curriculum Committee follows policies and procedures for course and program<br />

development and evaluation as required by Title 5. The Program and Course Approval<br />

Handbook prepared by the Chancellor‘s Office provides further clarification and guidance to<br />

Committee members. (II.A.36) The Academic Senate for California Community <strong>College</strong>s<br />

further guides the college‘s course development process through such publications as The<br />

Course Outline of Record: A Curriculum Reference Guide. (II.A.37) Training is conducted<br />

each year by the Curriculum Committee Chair or a designee to assure adherence to State<br />

regulations for approval of stand-alone credit courses.<br />

FACULTY LEADERSHIP IN DEVELOPING AND IMPROVING CURRICULA<br />

Discipline faculty are the recognized subject matter experts in their fields of study, and they<br />

take an active role in the development and assessment of all courses and programs within<br />

their discipline. All new courses, course revisions, and course modifications are initiated at<br />

the faculty level. After discipline and administrative (Dean) review, courses are submitted to<br />

the Curriculum Committee for approval. The development and revision process is guided<br />

through CurricUNET and faculty initiators may be given assistance through consultation<br />

with the Curriculum Chair and the Dean of Curriculum and Instructional Support.<br />

Once entered into CurricUNET, the course data flows through several levels of review before<br />

it is ready for Committee approval. The Committee reviews all course data to ensure that<br />

student learning outcomes have been identified, and information such as unit value, hours,<br />
