Descriptive Summary<br />

<strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers a broad range of career technical education programs designed to<br />

prepare students for the job market. Since 2007-08, there has been an emphasis on<br />

preparation for those jobs that are prevalent in the Salinas Valley and which are likely to pay<br />

a higher than minimum wage. (II.A.11) Occupational programs at <strong>Hartnell</strong> include the<br />

following:<br />

Administration of Justice<br />

Agriculture (Ag-Business, Ag-Production or Food Safety emphasis)<br />

Agricultural and Industrial Technology<br />

Welding Technology<br />

Automotive Technology<br />

Heavy Duty Diesel<br />

Construction (Sustainable Construction and Green Building)<br />

Computer Science and Information Systems<br />

Business Office Technology<br />

Early Childhood Education<br />

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling<br />

Registered and Vocational Nursing<br />

These programs offer certificates of achievement, associate degrees, eligibility to sit for<br />

national or state exams, and preparation for transfer to four-year institutions. (II.A.2)<br />

Career technical education programs at <strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong> remain current as a result of<br />

regularly scheduled advisory committee meetings comprising faculty and local industry<br />

leaders. Additionally, selected programs are approved by specific accreditation bodies and/or<br />

national societies (e.g., California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN)). (II.A.67)<br />

SAMPLE CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS<br />

This section describes sample career technical education programs that prepare students to<br />

take qualifying exams prior to employment, and rely on Advisory Board collaboration to<br />

ensure that industry standards are upheld.<br />

The Registered Nursing Program has a competitive admissions program, with 40-50<br />

students accepted annually. The admissions process follows the California Community<br />

<strong>College</strong>s Chancellor‘s Office recommendations for admission. The retention rate for classes<br />

entering in 2009-2011 was been greater than 85% and has been supported by a grant-funded<br />

―Success and Retention Program.‖ This program offers classes to assist all enrolled nursing<br />

students (as an elective) in test-taking, time management and study skills, and selfempowerment<br />

strategies as well as ―weekend camps‖ for nursing skills practice.<br />
