The distribution and utilization of technology resources support the development,<br />

maintenance, and enhancement of its programs and services.<br />

Descriptive Summary<br />

Decision-making about the use and distribution of the college‘s technology investments is<br />

focused on institutional need as identified from shared governance and strategic groups,<br />

including the THRFC, the RAC, DEC and the FIS, that include faculty and staff. The<br />

acquisition of equipment and support of information technology is carried out by the ITS.<br />

All full-time faculty, classified staff, and administration have access to desktop computers.<br />

Part-time faculty have access to computers and support technology in centralized areas on<br />

each campus. The college has centralized the acquisition of 600 faculty and staff desktop<br />

computers, and administers a desktop lease refresh program that plans for the five-year<br />

refresh of desktop computers. This ensures a level of desktop standardization for operating<br />

systems and capacity to run college supported software. All full-time faculty, classified staff,<br />

and administrators are given access to district software including the Microsoft Windows<br />

operating system, Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Suite, and an @hartnell e-mail account.<br />

There are 27 smart classrooms throughout the college, equating to 90% coverage of all<br />

classrooms.<br />

The Distance Education program is supported college wide through the budget process and<br />

through the efforts of both the instructional and student services areas. The program is staffed<br />

by a dean, a Faculty Distance Education Committee, and an instructional technology<br />

specialist available to assist faculty in the development of teaching materials utilizing<br />

multimedia hardware and software and in the use of e<strong>College</strong>/Etudes functions. In addition,<br />

there are two dedicated computer technology coordinators in the both the library and two<br />

other in ITS who are available to assist as needed. All courses at <strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong>, whether<br />

designated as face-to-face or online, have access to e<strong>College</strong>/Etudes course shells.<br />

<strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong> makes technology accessible to students in multiple areas. Open computer<br />

labs with both general and program-specific computer resources are available to students at<br />

all campus sites. The centers provide facilitated student access to technology that allows<br />

multiple student services functions. Computers in the learning resource centers are available<br />

to students working with tutors on specific coursework. The college supports about 12<br />

computer labs throughout the college.<br />

Desktop virtualization (VDI) activities will create opportunities for students to have 24/7<br />
