Professional Development Program to support training and to hold monthly meetings to<br />

assess training needs and to plan, develop and deliver new technology trainings to faculty,<br />

staff and administrators.<br />

technology infrastructure and equipment to meet institutional needs.<br />

Descriptive Summary<br />

<strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong> systematically provides the staffing, organization, funding and participative<br />

governance structures necessary to ensure the effective management, maintenance and<br />

operation of its technological infrastructure and equipment.<br />

The following sections explain efforts and initiatives being pursued and supported to plan,<br />

maintain, upgrade or replace technology infrastructure to meet institutional needs.<br />

IT STAFFING TO SUPPORT INSTITUTIONAL NEEDS<br />

IT: The management, maintenance and operation of the college‘s technological infrastructure<br />

and equipment is primarily handled through the District‘s central technology organization,<br />

Information Technology Services (ITS). ITS is organized to support the development,<br />

improvement and support of IT systems, including software applications, networks,<br />

instructional computer labs, smart classrooms, personal computing and telephony for the<br />

District‘s Main Campus, Alisal Campus, and King City Education Center. In addition to<br />

providing direct technical support through staff, ITS manages some of its systems through<br />

outsourcing contracts. The college has invested in scheduling software to improve the<br />

efficiency of counseling sessions by increasing the number of sessions in which a counselor<br />

can engage.<br />

<strong>College</strong> Staffing: In addition to the staffing in ITS which handles all network, account<br />

management, software, telephony, and help desk related tasks, the college provides a limited<br />

number of IT staff to directly assist with instruction in computer and faculty centered<br />

professional development labs (FRC). The college also has a web coordinator who<br />

coordinates and maintains the college‘s website. The college has established a senior<br />

leadership position for oversight and coordination of technology and is currently held by Vice<br />

President of Information and Technology Resources, Matthew Coombs.<br />

External Staffing: The college outsources some of its IT support needs to vendors. The<br />

college‘s learning management system (LMS) was until recently maintained by e<strong>College</strong> –<br />

now by the Etudes consortium. <strong>Hartnell</strong> is following an increasing trend to use a Learning<br />
