Self Evaluation<br />

As evident from previous sections, assessment and analyses are pervasive through the<br />

college‘s educational and administrative programs. However, the assessment of the<br />

effectiveness of these evaluation mechanisms requires further development and<br />

implementation. The recent hiring of the Dean of Institutional Resaerch and Effectiveness is<br />

intended to provide support for these efforts.<br />

Program Planning and Assessment is the committee that has developed the process by which<br />

the institution reviews its programs and services for effectiveness. (I.B.33) This process is<br />

conducted on an annual basis during which activities are defined for the current year and<br />

reviewed from the prior year. In addition, data including retention, success rates, completion<br />

rates and course level assessment are examined. A more comprehensive, drill down approach<br />

is used every five years. Career and Technical Education programs perform a comprehensive<br />

review every two years. The college has made significant progress in resurrecting program<br />

review in a more effective form. Since the last visit of 2007, significant changes were made<br />

to the program preview process. These changes include: updating the prompts, questions and<br />

measurable criteria; changing the timeline from a five year review to annual planning with a<br />

comprehensive review; integrating resource requests with budget and resource allocation<br />

processes; and utilizing a software based program for conducting the reviews. Obstacles were<br />

encountered in the implementation and application of the software on the instructional side;<br />

as a result, a document-based approach for completing annual planning was used.<br />

Given the wide implementation of the PPA process, and its implications on planning and<br />

resource allocation, it is imperative that mechanisms be developed to evaluate the<br />

effectiveness of these processes.<br />

The college partially meets this standard.<br />

Planning Agenda<br />

During the 2012-13 year the college vice presidents, working within the participatory<br />

governance structure, will be responsible for more fully developing and implementing<br />

procedures for assessing the effectiveness of evaluation mechanisms necessary for improving<br />

instructional programs, student support services, and library and other learning support<br />

services.<br />
