The institution relies on faculty, its academic senate or other appropriate faculty<br />

structures, the curriculum committee, and academic administrators for recommendations<br />

about student learning programs and services.<br />

Descriptive Summary<br />

The Academic Senate: In compliance with Title 5 and AB 1725, <strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong> relies on<br />

the Academic Senate for recommendations on student learning programs and services. Board<br />

policy 2005 (IV.A.43) specifically agrees to rely primarily on the advice of the Academic<br />

Senate in matters of:<br />

Curriculum, degree and certificate requirements<br />

Grading policies<br />

Educational program development<br />

Student success and retention<br />

Governance structures of the college<br />

<strong>Accreditation</strong><br />

Faculty professional development<br />

Policies for Program Review<br />

Processes for Institutional Planning and Budget Development<br />

Other academic and professional matters mutually agreed upon between the<br />

Board and the Academic Senate<br />

The Academic Senate appoints the members and chairs of all standing committees. These<br />

include the Curriculum Committee, Faculty Full-time Hiring Committee, Tenure Review<br />

Committee, Faculty Sabbatical Committee, Faculty Development Committee, and Student<br />

Learning Outcomes and Assessment Committee. Thus, the Academic Senate takes<br />

responsibility for curriculum and academic programs as well as faculty hiring and<br />

professional development.<br />

To disseminate information in an effective and timely manner, the Academic Senate website<br />

lists each committee, structure, outcomes, membership, meeting schedule, minutes and<br />

agendas are also included on the website of each committee. The Shared Governance<br />

Committee Handbook is also housed on the site (IV.A.17).<br />

The Student Learning Outcomes and Assessment (SLOA) Committee: The SLOA chair<br />

was assigned 100% release time to assist faculty in writing and assessing student learning<br />

outcomes (SLO)s and documenting the work in CurricUNET. Along with the PPA/SLO<br />

committee (Program Planning and Assessment/SLO, a hybrid of shared governance and<br />
