including modifications and improvements of their teaching methodologies. Finally, the<br />

evaluation team assesses the faculty member‘s professional competence and conduct, which<br />

specifically includes whether the faculty member measures student performance and presents<br />

students with clear course objectives, whether the instructor meets obligations resulting from<br />

state mandates or district policies, and whether the instructor teaches the subject matter<br />

described in the college catalog and course outlines (which include SLOs).<br />

Through work sponsored by a Title V grant, <strong>Hartnell</strong> has created tools that can show student<br />

success and persistence at section, course, and program levels. These tools are widely<br />

discussed and utilized by faculty and departments to improve and adapt teaching methods, to<br />

re-sequence courses, and to develop interventions (including directed learning activities and<br />

intensive cohort-based summer programs) and supplemental instruction. With these<br />

capabilities in hand and faculty enthusiasm for the process, the college is well poised to<br />

ensure that the achievement of student learning outcomes is central to the evaluation process.<br />

Self Evaluation<br />

<strong>Hartnell</strong> <strong>College</strong> has a long history of dialogue and action related to defining student learning<br />

outcomes for courses, implementing and documenting student learning outcomes, and<br />

publishing them. Faculty and others directly responsible for student progress toward<br />

achieving stated student learning outcomes have implemented processes to ensure that the<br />

<strong>College</strong> has a well-defined and rigorous process for implementing SLOs and program<br />

review. Instructors are now moving to the next level in assessing their SLOs and seeing how<br />

students progress toward meeting the stated student outcomes. <strong>Hartnell</strong> has systematically<br />

provisioned Title V grant dollars to create online tools that assess student success pathways<br />

and attrition markers for learning pathways. These innovative and effective tools are being<br />

requested from and shared with other colleges. (III.A.14) The SLO Committee will continue<br />

to train and mentor faculty and staff to focus on outcomes assessment and to improve<br />

learning for students.<br />
