Chapter 5, Vignette 2 Page 145<br />

set up our ambush cover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

We saw <strong>the</strong> column approach slowly. Soldiers with m<strong>in</strong>e detect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

dogs were walk<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> front of <strong>the</strong> column. The dogs were runn<strong>in</strong>g loose<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y promptly found and po<strong>in</strong>ted out our bombs. Sheragha and<br />

Shawali moved forward when <strong>the</strong>y saw <strong>the</strong> dogs. They watched as <strong>the</strong><br />

dogs stood by <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e. Two soldiers got out of an APC with a long<br />

probe. The soldiers started prob<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> manure piles and <strong>the</strong>y found<br />

<strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> third pile. Four <strong>Soviet</strong>s, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g an officer, crowded<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r look<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e. So, Sheragha and Shawali opened fire<br />

kill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> four <strong>Soviet</strong>s. The rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>Soviet</strong>s pulled back out of <strong>the</strong><br />

ambush kill zone.<br />

The <strong>Soviet</strong>s began to return fire. Commander Padshah ordered<br />

four <strong>Mujahideen</strong> to move north onto Tarakhel hill to provide cover<strong>in</strong>g<br />

fire for <strong>the</strong> group's withdrawal. To confuse <strong>the</strong> enemy, he grabbed his<br />

megaphone and yelled "Keep your positions. The re<strong>in</strong>forcements just<br />

arrived." A DRA column came from Mehtar Lam and took up defensive<br />

positions and started fir<strong>in</strong>g at us. Tanks also maneuvered aga<strong>in</strong>st us<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Mehtar Lam pla<strong>in</strong> west of <strong>the</strong> road. We withdrew under <strong>the</strong><br />

cover of night. We know we killed four <strong>Soviet</strong>s and may have killed or<br />

wounded up to 18 DRA and <strong>Soviet</strong>s. We destroyed one of <strong>the</strong>ir tanks<br />

and two trucks.<br />

CHAPTER COMMENTARY<br />

The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> preference for home-made m<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> metal cans<br />

made it easier for <strong>Soviet</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e detectors to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong>m. The tendency for<br />

curious troops to cluster around a newly-discovered m<strong>in</strong>e is not<br />

uniquely <strong>Soviet</strong>, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong>s eventually tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>ir eng<strong>in</strong>eers to<br />

quit cluster<strong>in</strong>g around m<strong>in</strong>es.<br />

The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> usually comb<strong>in</strong>ed demolitions and m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g with<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r forms of offensive and defensive action. They usually covered<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>es with direct fire weapons. The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> seldom left<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir m<strong>in</strong>es unattended if <strong>the</strong>y were located a distance from <strong>the</strong> border<br />

and a ready supply of m<strong>in</strong>es. After an ambush or fight, <strong>the</strong>y would<br />

often dig up <strong>the</strong>ir unexpended m<strong>in</strong>es and take <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong><br />

next mission.
