INTRODUCTION<br />

As we have throughout our history—<strong>the</strong> Philipp<strong>in</strong>es, Haiti,<br />

Nicaragua, Lebanon, Vietnam and Somalia—Mar<strong>in</strong>es will encounter<br />

guerrilla forces <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 21 st<br />

century. Mar<strong>in</strong>es must understand potential<br />

adversaries, and learn as much as possible about <strong>the</strong>m. The<br />

mujahideen of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong>-<strong>Afghan</strong> <strong>War</strong> prevailed aga<strong>in</strong>st a larger and<br />

decisively better equipped foe, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong> Army. The O<strong>the</strong>r Side of <strong>the</strong><br />

Mounta<strong>in</strong> presents <strong>the</strong> story of <strong>the</strong> mujahideen's fight aga<strong>in</strong>st that foe.<br />

On 27 December 1979, Moscow ordered <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong> Army <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>Afghan</strong>istan. Organized, equipped, and tra<strong>in</strong>ed for <strong>the</strong> execution of<br />

comb<strong>in</strong>ed arms operations, that force embodied <strong>the</strong> concept of<br />

blitzkrieg. N<strong>in</strong>e years later, it withdrew <strong>in</strong> defeat. The O<strong>the</strong>r Side of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Mounta<strong>in</strong> was written from <strong>the</strong> reports of mujahideen combat veterans<br />

and provides a tactical look at a decentralized army of footmobile<br />

guerrillas wag<strong>in</strong>g war aga<strong>in</strong>st a technologically superior foe.<br />

Absolute supremacy of firepower did not guarantee victory. Native<br />

knowledge of terra<strong>in</strong> and detailed study of a known adversary offset<br />

that advantage. In particular, <strong>the</strong> chapter on urban combat will be of<br />

great <strong>in</strong>terest to commanders concerned with force protection. This<br />

book and its companion volume, The Bear Went Over <strong>the</strong> Mounta<strong>in</strong>:<br />

<strong>Soviet</strong> Combat <strong>Tactics</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Afghan</strong>istan, published for <strong>the</strong> United States<br />

Mar<strong>in</strong>e Corps <strong>in</strong> 1996, offers a chronicle of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Afghan</strong> <strong>War</strong> by <strong>the</strong><br />

warfighters.<br />

The Mar<strong>in</strong>e Corps of <strong>the</strong> 21 st<br />

century will have tremendous advantages<br />

over guerrilla forces. Our equipment, technology, tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

support are <strong>the</strong> best <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. Yet, technological superiority is not<br />

<strong>in</strong> and of itself a guarantee of success. Insight <strong>in</strong>to our adversary's<br />

capabilities, tactics and motivation will provide <strong>the</strong> decisive edge. The<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r Side of <strong>the</strong> Mounta<strong>in</strong> will help us ga<strong>in</strong> this <strong>in</strong>sight. I heartily<br />

recommend this book to all Mar<strong>in</strong>es.<br />
