DRA/<strong>Soviet</strong> operations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Malajat area were very predictable by<br />

time and location. They cont<strong>in</strong>ually tried to penetrate and sweep <strong>the</strong><br />

entire area <strong>in</strong>stead of cordon<strong>in</strong>g off and sweep<strong>in</strong>g a smaller section<br />

thoroughly. Although <strong>the</strong> combat <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Malajat area was a fight<br />

through a fortified area, <strong>the</strong> DRA/<strong>Soviet</strong>s cont<strong>in</strong>ued to treat it as a<br />

penetration and exploitation ra<strong>the</strong>r than a systematic reduction.<br />

DRA/<strong>Soviet</strong> tactical <strong>in</strong>telligence apparently did not pick up <strong>the</strong> pattern<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> resupply and relief activities to exploit it.
