COMMENTARY: The <strong>Soviet</strong>s had set a pattern of behavior which<br />

enabled <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> ambushes. They used <strong>the</strong> same roads and<br />

paths regularly. Their behavior toward <strong>the</strong> villagers made <strong>the</strong><br />

villagers will<strong>in</strong>g accomplices <strong>in</strong> sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ambushes and hid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> and <strong>the</strong>ir weapons. The DRA had travel<strong>in</strong>g propaganda/civil<br />

affairs teams which provided enterta<strong>in</strong>ment, medical<br />

treatment and pro-regime propaganda throughout <strong>Afghan</strong>istan. 9<br />

<strong>Soviet</strong> combat forces.<br />
