Kochi—Kochi are nomadic tribesmen of <strong>Afghan</strong>istan. They live<br />

primarily by herd<strong>in</strong>g and trad<strong>in</strong>g sheep, goats and camels.<br />

Koh—Dari term for mounta<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Lashkar—A Pushto term for tribal armed force.<br />

LOC—L<strong>in</strong>es of communication.<br />

LZ—Land<strong>in</strong>g zone.<br />

Madrassa—Arabic term for an Islamic religious school.<br />

Markaz—<strong>Mujahideen</strong> base.<br />

Mawlawi—Islamic religious scholar.<br />

MIA—Miss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Action.<br />

Model 1938 Mortar—The <strong>Soviet</strong> Model 1938 107mm mortar was orig<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

<strong>the</strong> standard regimental mortar for mounta<strong>in</strong> units. It is<br />

a reduced size version of <strong>the</strong> 120mm mortar suitable for transport<br />

on a pack animal. It can fire 15 rounds per m<strong>in</strong>ute and has<br />

a maximum range of 5150 meters fir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> heavy round and<br />

6300 meters fir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> light round.<br />

Mulla—Islamic religious leader or Imam.<br />

Mos<strong>in</strong>-Nagant—The Model M1891/30 is a Russian/<strong>Soviet</strong> bolt-action<br />

rifle or carb<strong>in</strong>e which fires <strong>the</strong> 7.62x54 cartridge. It was used<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Russo-Japanese <strong>War</strong>, World <strong>War</strong> I and World <strong>War</strong> II.<br />

Many models come with a fold<strong>in</strong>g bayonet. The rifle has a maximum<br />

range of 2000 meters and an effective range of 400<br />

meters. The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> called <strong>the</strong>m five-shooters.<br />

MRL (Multiple rocket launcher)—A ground-mounted or truckmounted<br />

rocket artillery system capable of fir<strong>in</strong>g a salvo of<br />

rockets at a target.<br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> (holy warrior)—A member of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Afghan</strong> resistance.<br />

National Islamic Front of <strong>Afghan</strong>istan (NIFA)—(Mahaz-e-Melli<br />

Islami}). Founded by Pir Sayed Ahmad Gailani, this moderate<br />

party attracted a number of former officers from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Afghan</strong><br />

Army and moderate technocrats.<br />

NIFA—National Islamic Front of <strong>Afghan</strong>istan of Gailani.<br />

OP—Observation Post.<br />

Parcham—(Farsi for flag) Faction of <strong>the</strong> communist PDPA.<br />

PDPA—Peoples Democratic Party of <strong>Afghan</strong>istan—<strong>the</strong> communist<br />

party of <strong>Afghan</strong>istan.<br />

Pir—Title designat<strong>in</strong>g sa<strong>in</strong>thood and leader <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sufi orders.
