to <strong>the</strong> east side of Tamberi Ghar. The<br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> countered with block<strong>in</strong>g positions which <strong>the</strong>y held for<br />

five days. Haji Amanullah Khan and Ismail Khan played major roles<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g at this stage.<br />

The DRA Commander, General Tani moved his CP <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Manay<br />

Kandow pass and tried to re<strong>in</strong>vigorate <strong>the</strong> DRA assault, but <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> held. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> shot down a<br />

helicopter, but lost a major commander—Mawlawi Fathullah.<br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> re<strong>in</strong>forcements arrived from Pakistan and as far away<br />

as Jalalabad and Urgun. Commander Mawlawi Arsalah arrived.<br />

The DRA were gett<strong>in</strong>g chronically low on men and supplies and, after<br />

42 days of fight<strong>in</strong>g, General Tani broke contact and conducted a<br />

night withdrawal.<br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> casualties were 106 KIA and 321 WIA. DRA and<br />

<strong>Soviet</strong> losses were heavy, but <strong>the</strong>ir numbers are unknown because <strong>the</strong>y<br />

evacuated <strong>the</strong>ir dead and wounded.<br />

COMMENTARY: Zhawar was a symbol of <strong>Mujahideen</strong> <strong>in</strong>v<strong>in</strong>cibility<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> border area and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong>s and DRA felt that <strong>the</strong>y had to<br />

destroy this myth. The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> were conv<strong>in</strong>ced that Zhawar was<br />

impregnable and failed to take some basic security precautions.<br />

September-October and March-April are historically <strong>the</strong> best months<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>Afghan</strong>istan for campaign<strong>in</strong>g, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r is reasonable<br />

and <strong>the</strong> roads are dry. August-September that year was also <strong>the</strong> time<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Haj and <strong>the</strong> senior leadership of <strong>the</strong> area all made this<br />

religious pilgrimage toge<strong>the</strong>r. Consequently, <strong>the</strong> senior leadership<br />

was absent when <strong>the</strong> battle started and o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Mujahideen</strong> commanders<br />

had to take command of <strong>the</strong> battle. Field fortifications around<br />

Zhawar were neglected and <strong>in</strong>complete. The excellent field fortifications<br />

at <strong>the</strong> mouth of <strong>the</strong> Manay Kandow pass bought time to<br />

improve <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r fortifications The complacent attitude almost cost<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir base. Only <strong>the</strong> unexpected appearance of<br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> armor at a crucial m<strong>in</strong>ute prevented a DRA victory.<br />

The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> were able to move men and supplies from<br />

Miram Shah <strong>in</strong> Pakistan throughout <strong>the</strong> battle. The DRA apparently<br />

made no attempt to impede access by deploy<strong>in</strong>g scatterable<br />

m<strong>in</strong>es aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> route.
