COMMENTARY: The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> penetration of <strong>the</strong> DRA was essential<br />

for successful raids like this. Enter<strong>in</strong>g a sleep<strong>in</strong>g compound is always<br />

a high-risk proposition s<strong>in</strong>ce someone is always awake, or wakes up,<br />

besides <strong>the</strong> sentries. A secure approach and withdrawal route is essential<br />

to urban guerrillas. Hav<strong>in</strong>g local guerrillas secure <strong>the</strong> route<br />

allowed <strong>the</strong> force to br<strong>in</strong>g enough people to carry <strong>the</strong> weapons without<br />

worry<strong>in</strong>g about be<strong>in</strong>g ambushed on <strong>the</strong> way out.<br />

CHAPTER COMMENTARY<br />

Urban combat is difficult for <strong>the</strong> urban guerrilla and <strong>the</strong> regular<br />

force. Throughout <strong>the</strong> war, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong>s and DRA were never able to<br />

completely control Kandahar and Herat. F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong>s dealt<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Herat guerrillas by bomb<strong>in</strong>g 75% of <strong>the</strong> city <strong>in</strong>to rubble. That<br />

still failed to stop <strong>the</strong> urban guerrilla. The DRA had more success <strong>in</strong><br />

controll<strong>in</strong>g Kabul—but still were unable to stop <strong>the</strong> rocket attacks and<br />

guerrilla actions. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, surviv<strong>in</strong>g urban guerrillas are<br />

harder to f<strong>in</strong>d to <strong>in</strong>terview. The urban guerrilla must be anonymous<br />

and ruthless to survive. The <strong>Soviet</strong>s and DRA devoted a great deal of<br />

effort to f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g and elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> -urban guerrilla.
