<strong>the</strong> high ground at Loy Baghal Ghar. The Somochak <strong>Mujahideen</strong> re<strong>in</strong>forced<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir positions near <strong>the</strong> village. The Zarshakh and Ghaza<br />
<strong>Mujahideen</strong> moved to cut <strong>the</strong> LOC of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong> force east of <strong>the</strong><br />
Torghonday hills. We had encircled <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong> force <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>ast<br />
sector with about 100 <strong>Mujahideen</strong>.<br />
The fight<strong>in</strong>g went on aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> DRA/<strong>Soviet</strong> forces throughout<br />
Paghman. We kept <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>Soviet</strong> block<strong>in</strong>g force p<strong>in</strong>ned down,<br />
exchang<strong>in</strong>g fire with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong> troops for two nights and three days.<br />
We commanders met and decided to attack and elim<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong><br />
force on <strong>the</strong> afternoon of <strong>the</strong> third day. We launched <strong>the</strong> attack from<br />
<strong>the</strong> west while <strong>the</strong> eastern <strong>Mujahideen</strong> conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> enemy. Our<br />
progress was slow, however, s<strong>in</strong>ce we did not have enough support<br />
weapons. We had Kalashnikovs, .303 Enfields; a few RPG-7s and some<br />
60mm mortars with a small stock of ammunition. We needed heavy<br />
mach<strong>in</strong>e guns, 82mm mortars and rockets. As we <strong>Mujahideen</strong> were<br />
clos<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong> positions, some 14 <strong>Soviet</strong> helicopters, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
gunships, arrived over <strong>the</strong> battlefield and began gun runs aga<strong>in</strong>st us.<br />
We susta<strong>in</strong>ed heavy casualties and broke off <strong>the</strong> attack. The transport<br />
helicopters landed and began lift<strong>in</strong>g off <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong> troops and flew<br />
<strong>the</strong>m away to Kabul. We had won <strong>the</strong> fight, but we suffered 23 KIA<br />
and many o<strong>the</strong>rs WIA <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> three-day battle.<br />
COMMENTARY: The <strong>Soviet</strong>/DRA force did an effective job <strong>in</strong>itially<br />
<strong>in</strong> disguis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir objective and manag<strong>in</strong>g to move <strong>the</strong>ir nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />
column while elud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Mujahideen</strong> surveillance. The nor<strong>the</strong>rn column<br />
effectively performed a surprise approach march and quietly occupied<br />
necessary terra<strong>in</strong>. The nor<strong>the</strong>rn column was organized to block<br />
<strong>Mujahideen</strong> escape routes and so was lightly equipped. It was<br />
battalion-sized or smaller. It seized and occupied its <strong>in</strong>itial position,<br />
but made no effort to expand that position so that it could achieve<br />
its objective of completely block<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Mujahideen</strong> escape routes.<br />
Fur<strong>the</strong>r, once it disclosed its presence by fir<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> litter party, it<br />
made no attempt to seize <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiative, but rema<strong>in</strong>ed passively <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
defense. Coord<strong>in</strong>ation between <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn column and <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong><br />
column was lack<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> column seemed unable or un<strong>in</strong>terested<br />
<strong>in</strong> aid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn column despite <strong>the</strong>ir close proximity.<br />
The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> reaction was excellent. They quickly took up positions<br />
on command<strong>in</strong>g high ground overlook<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong> positions and<br />
sealed <strong>the</strong> area, trapp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong> force. However, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong><br />
lacked long-range heavy weapons, so <strong>the</strong>y could not exploit <strong>the</strong> advantage<br />
that <strong>the</strong>ir dom<strong>in</strong>ant terra<strong>in</strong> gave <strong>the</strong>m. The <strong>Soviet</strong>s were <strong>in</strong> range
