approaches to Dehrawud from <strong>the</strong> south, but, as <strong>the</strong> seige cont<strong>in</strong>ued,<br />

many of <strong>the</strong> fighters found more press<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess to attend to<br />

<strong>the</strong>n sitt<strong>in</strong>g idly on a mounta<strong>in</strong>. They departed one after ano<strong>the</strong>r and<br />

left <strong>the</strong> approaches open. Both <strong>the</strong> Kajaki axis and <strong>the</strong> Kotal-e<br />

Murcha axis were very easy to block with a small detachment of<br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ed fighters. If <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> had held <strong>the</strong>ir positions,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y could have stopped <strong>the</strong> large columns of <strong>the</strong>ir enemy and celebrated<br />

a <strong>Mujahideen</strong> victory <strong>in</strong> Dehrawud. But, once aga<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> experience demonstrated <strong>the</strong>ir tactical and logistical<br />

limitations <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g control over large forces for an extended<br />

period of time. Most of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> were not fight<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

home territory and, <strong>the</strong>refore, were less enthusiastic about rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> stationary positions for an extended period of time while <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Soviet</strong> Air Force attacked <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Air power, while seldom decisive <strong>in</strong> guerrilla war, played a major<br />

role <strong>in</strong> break<strong>in</strong>g this seige. Once <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> assumed static positions,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong> Air Force was able to delay <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> assault<br />

and ga<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> time needed for <strong>the</strong> ground forces to reach <strong>the</strong> battlefield.
