COMMENTARY: Less than 15% of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> commanders had previous<br />

military experience, yet <strong>the</strong> impact of <strong>the</strong> military who jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> was significant. They provided a cont<strong>in</strong>uity, an understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of military plann<strong>in</strong>g and issues, a modicum of uniform tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

and an ability to deal with outside agencies provid<strong>in</strong>g aid to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong>. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, <strong>the</strong>se were fairly soft targets. The<br />

security outposts were situated <strong>in</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g build<strong>in</strong>gs backed by wooded<br />

high ground. The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> had concealed approaches and exits<br />

as well as <strong>in</strong>side help.
