alties <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r groups. All <strong>the</strong> wounded who could walk, walked to<br />

Pakistan for treatment. The o<strong>the</strong>r wounded were treated by local<br />

doctors. Doctors from Kabul hospitals would come to help us also. Dr.<br />

Abdur Rahman from a hospital <strong>in</strong> Kabul would often treat our wounded.<br />

I do not know what <strong>the</strong> enemy losses were, but <strong>the</strong>y must have<br />

suffered a lot to quit on <strong>the</strong> br<strong>in</strong>k of victory.<br />

COMMENTARY: The DRA/<strong>Soviet</strong>s had <strong>the</strong> opportunity to attack <strong>the</strong><br />

eastern and western canyon mouths simultaneously. The <strong>Mujahideen</strong><br />

defenses were oriented to <strong>the</strong> west. Even on <strong>the</strong> second day, when <strong>the</strong><br />

DRA/<strong>Soviet</strong>s tried to envelop <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> position from <strong>the</strong> Tobagi<br />

pla<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong>y did not hook around <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>, but tried to go over <strong>the</strong><br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>. The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> were used to <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s, whereas <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Soviet</strong>s were not and <strong>the</strong>ir equipment was not designed for climb<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>s. Later <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> war, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong>s issued better equipment for<br />

fight<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s and began tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir soldiers at mounta<strong>in</strong><br />

warfare sites. At this po<strong>in</strong>t, <strong>the</strong> non-nimble <strong>Soviet</strong>s and <strong>the</strong> reluctant<br />

DRA were no match for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> <strong>in</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong> maneuver.<br />

They should have taken <strong>the</strong> canyon from both ends. Fur<strong>the</strong>r, if <strong>the</strong><br />

DRA or <strong>Soviet</strong>s had covertly moved some artillery spotters onto high<br />

ground before <strong>the</strong> offensive, <strong>the</strong>y could have unh<strong>in</strong>ged <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong><br />

defenses before <strong>the</strong>y were established.<br />

The <strong>Soviet</strong>s had not yet developed <strong>the</strong>ir air assault tactics for counter<strong>in</strong>surgency.<br />

The mounta<strong>in</strong> tops of Sp<strong>in</strong> Ghar and Lakay Ghar can<br />

handle heliborne land<strong>in</strong>gs and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> air defense posture was<br />

negligible at this po<strong>in</strong>t. A small <strong>Soviet</strong> force, re<strong>in</strong>forced with mortars,<br />

artillery spotters and forward air controllers and mach<strong>in</strong>e guns could<br />

have created havoc from <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong> tops.
