we carried <strong>in</strong> most of our supplies by <strong>Mujahideen</strong> porters.<br />

The <strong>Soviet</strong>s cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>the</strong>ir move south. They preceded <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

movement by air assault land<strong>in</strong>gs to seize high ground on both<br />

sides of <strong>the</strong> road. Their columns would <strong>the</strong>n advance under <strong>the</strong><br />

protection of <strong>the</strong>se picket<strong>in</strong>g forces. As <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong>s moved forward,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y left security OPs beh<strong>in</strong>d to secure <strong>the</strong>ir l<strong>in</strong>es of communication.<br />

The <strong>Soviet</strong>s reached Lakatega and <strong>the</strong> columns from Satakandow<br />

and Saroti l<strong>in</strong>ked up. After that, it was smoo<strong>the</strong>r for <strong>the</strong>m. The<br />

<strong>Soviet</strong>s/DRA left a security detachment at Lakatega and advanced<br />

on Khowst. At <strong>the</strong> same time, a DRA detachment from <strong>the</strong> 25th<br />

Infantry division moved west out of Khowst to l<strong>in</strong>k up with <strong>the</strong><br />

approach<strong>in</strong>g column. After <strong>the</strong> force secured <strong>the</strong> road to Khowst, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

began mov<strong>in</strong>g supply columns along <strong>the</strong> road to resupply <strong>the</strong><br />

beleaguered city.<br />

The tide was beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to turn. The local <strong>Mujahideen</strong>, who had<br />

taken <strong>the</strong>ir families to Pakistan, returned. Mawlawi Jalaludd<strong>in</strong><br />

Haqani and o<strong>the</strong>r commanders (Matiullah, Mula Abdul Ghafur,<br />

Gulzarak Zadran, Amanullah, Mula Seddiq, Tawakal, Abdur-rahman,<br />

Wakil Wazir Mohammad, Pari, Padshah Khan and Sadat)<br />

arrived and moved <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s west of <strong>the</strong> highway. Colonel<br />

Imam of <strong>the</strong> Pakistani ISI arrived and tried to coord<strong>in</strong>ate, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> action. Haji Amanullah Khan and o<strong>the</strong>r commanders<br />

arrived. <strong>Mujahideen</strong> from o<strong>the</strong>r areas <strong>in</strong> <strong>Afghan</strong>istan arrived.<br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> and Taliban arrived from Pakistan. They were all eager<br />

for a fight. The Mujahi-deen selected 12 commanders and assigned<br />

enemy outposts between Wazi and Satakandow for <strong>the</strong>m to attack.<br />

The <strong>Soviet</strong>s had moved <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> side valleys, but <strong>the</strong> 12 commanders<br />

forced <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong>s out of <strong>the</strong> side valleys and conf<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>m to <strong>the</strong><br />

vic<strong>in</strong>ity of <strong>the</strong> road. Then <strong>the</strong>y began attack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> road. Jalaludd<strong>in</strong><br />

Haqani, was at Fakhry. Once aga<strong>in</strong>, Jalaludd<strong>in</strong> Haqani was wounded<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g battle—this time with shrapnel <strong>in</strong> his thigh. Although<br />

Haqani was wounded, he stayed on for a week. Then he was evacuated<br />

on mule back over mounta<strong>in</strong> paths to Miram Shah.<br />

The <strong>Soviet</strong>s/DRA could only keep <strong>the</strong> road open for 12 days. Then<br />

<strong>the</strong>y withdrew. When <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong> air assault abandoned <strong>the</strong> heights,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y took <strong>the</strong>ir weapons, but left all <strong>the</strong> ammunition beh<strong>in</strong>d. The<br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> recaptured <strong>the</strong> road and nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> DRA nor <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong>s<br />

could reopen it.<br />

Despite <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tensity of battle, <strong>Mujahideen</strong> casualties were light.<br />

There were perhaps some 100 <strong>Mujahideen</strong> KIA. The villagers<br />

suffered greatly and <strong>the</strong> villages were heavily damaged or destroyed.
