PHASE ONE<br />

The strike groups <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>the</strong>ir attack along <strong>the</strong> extended<br />

front at 1000 hours, October 23. Rocket launchers, mortars, recoilless<br />

rifles and heavy mach<strong>in</strong>e guns provided support<strong>in</strong>g fire from <strong>the</strong><br />

sou<strong>the</strong>rn high ground overlook<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> highway. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> area was<br />

heavily m<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> enemy, my <strong>Mujahideen</strong> could not descend on<br />

<strong>the</strong> road from all po<strong>in</strong>ts. Instead, <strong>the</strong>y moved down a limited number<br />

of mounta<strong>in</strong> arroyos. These arroyos were safe s<strong>in</strong>ce m<strong>in</strong>efields could<br />

not be ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m due to <strong>the</strong> periodic flash floods which<br />

swept through <strong>the</strong>m. These arroyos were mostly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Debili and<br />

Dargo area.<br />

Once my <strong>Mujahideen</strong> passed through <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ed area, <strong>the</strong>y fanned<br />

out and attacked <strong>the</strong> enemy us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> paved road as <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong><br />

approach. Their movement was covered by fire from <strong>the</strong> high ground<br />

dom<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> gorge. The assault groups stormed <strong>the</strong> targeted<br />

enemy outposts and bases. After fierce fight<strong>in</strong>g, several posts were<br />

overrun and o<strong>the</strong>rs isolated from <strong>the</strong>ir bases and neighbor<strong>in</strong>g posts<br />

by 1600 hours.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g subsequent attacks through October 25, my force seized<br />

14 outposts and four bases. The occupants were killed, fled or<br />

captured. We seized about 100 prisoners, 11 tanks or APCs and 21<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r vehicles. We damaged <strong>the</strong> hydroelectric <strong>in</strong>stallations at Sarobi<br />

and Nghlu which supply electricity to Kabul and Jalalabad. Our losses<br />

were 10 killed and 21 wounded.<br />

Phase Two<br />

As my strike groups secured <strong>the</strong> highway, <strong>the</strong>y destroyed<br />

three highway bridges—Khairokhel bridge, Istehkam (Dargo) bridge<br />

and Debili bridge; m<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> road; set up road blocks and established<br />

fir<strong>in</strong>g positions on <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn high ground overlook<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> highway, <strong>the</strong> roadblocks and <strong>the</strong> destroyed bridges. Four o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

outposts and <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g bases, except <strong>the</strong> Mash ala base, fell to<br />

us by October 31.<br />

The DRA's reaction was slow and <strong>in</strong>cremental. The DRA now<br />

lacked sufficient observation and security posts on <strong>the</strong> high ground
