bombed and strafed <strong>Mujahideen</strong> positions. <strong>Mujahideen</strong> air defense<br />

was not very effective aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>se aircraft.<br />

Instead of defend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> positions be<strong>in</strong>g pounded by fighter-bombers<br />

and close-air support aircraft, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> went on <strong>the</strong> offensive<br />

and attacked <strong>the</strong> land<strong>in</strong>g zones. They quickly overran four land<strong>in</strong>g<br />

zones and captured many of <strong>the</strong> DRA commandos. <strong>Mujahideen</strong> re<strong>in</strong>forcements<br />

moved from Miram Shah <strong>in</strong> Pakistan to Zhawar and took<br />

<strong>the</strong> commandos from <strong>the</strong> rear. The commandos were trapped between<br />

two forces and were killed or captured. By <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> day, <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong> captured 530 commandos from <strong>the</strong> 38th Brigade. 16<br />

Meanwhile, <strong>Soviet</strong> aircraft with smart munitions made ordnance<br />

runs on <strong>the</strong> caves. S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> caves faced sou<strong>the</strong>ast toward Pakistan,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong> aircraft overflew Pakistan <strong>in</strong> order to turn and fly at <strong>the</strong><br />

sou<strong>the</strong>rn face with <strong>the</strong> smart weapons. Smart missiles hit <strong>the</strong> first<br />

western cave and killed 18 <strong>Mujahideen</strong> outright. Smart missiles hit<br />

<strong>the</strong> second western cave and collapsed <strong>the</strong> cave open<strong>in</strong>g trapp<strong>in</strong>g some<br />

150 <strong>Mujahideen</strong> <strong>in</strong>side. This second cave was 150-meters long and<br />

used as <strong>the</strong> radio transmission bunker. The commander, Jalaludd<strong>in</strong><br />

Haqani, who had just arrived from Miram Shah, was among those<br />

trapped <strong>the</strong> second cave.<br />

<strong>Soviet</strong> bombers followed <strong>the</strong> attack of <strong>the</strong> aircraft with <strong>the</strong> smart<br />

ordnance. They dropped tons of bombs and, <strong>in</strong> so do<strong>in</strong>g, blasted away<br />

<strong>the</strong> rubble block<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cave entrances. The trapped <strong>Mujahideen</strong><br />

escaped. The battle for <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g land<strong>in</strong>g zones cont<strong>in</strong>ued. There<br />

was one group of commandos on high ground who held out for three<br />

days before <strong>the</strong>y were f<strong>in</strong>ally overrun.<br />

The DRA had regarrisoned Lezhi s<strong>in</strong>ce Zhawar One and had<br />

fought for <strong>the</strong> possession of <strong>the</strong> Manay Kandow Pass to Zhawar for<br />

some 10 days follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> air land<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>Mujahideen</strong> attacked <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

LOCs and <strong>the</strong> airfield at Khost while <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> hold<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Manay Kandow checked <strong>the</strong>ir advance. In first battle for Zhawar,<br />

DRA/<strong>Soviet</strong> artillery and air strikes stopped at night, but this time<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were conducted around <strong>the</strong> clock. At night, <strong>the</strong>y dropped aerial<br />

flares for illum<strong>in</strong>ation. This heavy fire support cont<strong>in</strong>ued for 12 days.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ally, more DRA and <strong>Soviet</strong> forces came from Khost, through Tani,<br />

to re<strong>in</strong>force <strong>the</strong> effort at Lezhi. The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> fell back from <strong>the</strong><br />

Lezhi area <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> higher mounta<strong>in</strong>s and slowly <strong>the</strong> DRA/<strong>Soviet</strong><br />

force moved through <strong>the</strong> Manay Kandow. At <strong>the</strong> same time, <strong>the</strong><br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g Zhawar Two, <strong>the</strong> remnants of <strong>the</strong> 38th Commando Brigade became <strong>the</strong> base<br />
