cordoned area <strong>in</strong>to manageable segments and sweep those <strong>in</strong> turn.<br />

Instead, <strong>the</strong>ir sweep was uncoord<strong>in</strong>ated and large sectors of <strong>the</strong> green<br />

zone were never checked. This green zone is full of villages and fields<br />

and requires several days to clear. The <strong>Soviet</strong>s were reluctant to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><br />

a cordon at night, so <strong>the</strong>y hurried through <strong>the</strong> sweep and missed<br />

<strong>the</strong> bulk of <strong>the</strong> disorganized <strong>Mujahideen</strong>.
