VIGNETTE 8<br />

DEFENDING THE MALAJAT<br />

by Mohammad Shah Kako and Abdul Ghani<br />

The Malajat, <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn suburb of Kandahar, was a cont<strong>in</strong>uous<br />

battlefield. The Malajat is a large green zone full of orchards,<br />

villages, irrigation canals, and v<strong>in</strong>eyards. The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> deployed<br />

mobile bases throughout it. Many <strong>Mujahideen</strong> commanders with<br />

bases elsewhere would ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> mobile bases <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Malajat as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

forward elements <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kandahar area. Despite belong<strong>in</strong>g to different<br />

factions, <strong>the</strong>re was an exemplary cooperation among <strong>the</strong>se mobile<br />

groups. The DRA/<strong>Soviet</strong>s tried to force <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> out by cordon<br />

and search operations of <strong>the</strong> Malajat area. They would occupy <strong>the</strong><br />

high ground and villages north of <strong>the</strong> Tarnak River—Shorandam,<br />

Zaker-e Sharif, Loy Karazak, Anguryan, and Bala Deh which are<br />

north and west of <strong>the</strong> airfield. Then <strong>the</strong>y would establish <strong>the</strong> western<br />

block<strong>in</strong>g positions on <strong>the</strong> Girowal Ghar, Suf Ghar, Zarah Ghar<br />

and Chehelzena Ghar mounta<strong>in</strong>s (Map 11-11 - Mala). They used <strong>the</strong><br />

city of Kandahar as <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn block<strong>in</strong>g position. Kandahar was<br />

occupied by DRA forces. Then <strong>the</strong> <strong>Soviet</strong>s and DRA would push<br />

<strong>in</strong>ward <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> Malajat area from <strong>the</strong>se block<strong>in</strong>g positions search for<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong>. They were usually unsuccessful, but <strong>the</strong>y cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

to do it over and over aga<strong>in</strong>. The block<strong>in</strong>g positions were also part of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Kandahar security belt, but it was well-penetrated by <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Mujahideen</strong>. We would fight <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>itially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Malajat area and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n exit to <strong>the</strong> south <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Loy Karazak area and Anguryan and <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> southwest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hendu Kalacha area. The <strong>Soviet</strong>s had trouble<br />

controll<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se areas.<br />

The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> prepared block<strong>in</strong>g positions along major axes and<br />

turned this area <strong>in</strong>to an impregnable stronghold. A typical block<strong>in</strong>g<br />

position would be built near a mobile base and <strong>in</strong>clude several build<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

<strong>in</strong> a village or orchard, where <strong>the</strong> mobile group would live. The<br />

personnel <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mobile group would be relieved and replaced from<br />

time to time from <strong>the</strong>ir ma<strong>in</strong> bases. Some <strong>Mujahideen</strong> would stay<br />

permanently <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Malajat area. Mobile bases and block<strong>in</strong>g positions<br />

were connected by communications trenches. The block<strong>in</strong>g positions<br />

were dug <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> ground and had fir<strong>in</strong>g positions for mach<strong>in</strong>e guns,<br />

Mohammad Shah Kako <strong>in</strong>itially fought with HIK and <strong>the</strong>n switched to IUA. Abdul Ghani<br />

fought with <strong>the</strong> ANLF. [Map sheet 2180].
