<strong>the</strong>n all <strong>the</strong> officers were executed. All <strong>the</strong> soldiers were given<br />

amnesty s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>y were conscripts who were forced to fight. -The<br />

amnestied soldiers were asked to perform two years of labor service<br />

<strong>in</strong> exchange for <strong>the</strong> amnesty. They did <strong>the</strong>ir service <strong>in</strong> logistics, were<br />

reeducated and released after two years.<br />

COMMENTARY: The withdrawal of <strong>the</strong> HIH regiment, coupled with <strong>the</strong><br />

rumors of Haqani's death, greatly aided <strong>the</strong> DRA victory. Haqani's<br />

loss, besides affect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Mujahideen</strong> morale, cost <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> what<br />

little command and control <strong>the</strong>y had left at this juncture of <strong>the</strong> battle.<br />

The DRA failed to throw a block<strong>in</strong>g force on <strong>the</strong> Miram Shah road,<br />

although <strong>the</strong>y knew that <strong>Mujahideen</strong> re<strong>in</strong>forcements were mov<strong>in</strong>g<br />

along this route. As a m<strong>in</strong>imum, <strong>the</strong>y could have employed scatterable<br />

m<strong>in</strong>es on <strong>the</strong> road, but <strong>the</strong>y left <strong>the</strong> route open.<br />

Pakistan was clearly concerned with <strong>the</strong> major battle rag<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

her border and reportedly transported <strong>Mujahideen</strong> to <strong>the</strong> border and<br />

supplied MRL to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> who fired <strong>the</strong>m across <strong>the</strong> border<br />

<strong>in</strong>to Zhawar. The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> lacked effective air defense aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

helicopter gunships, and <strong>the</strong> straf<strong>in</strong>g and bomb<strong>in</strong>g attacks of highperformance<br />

aircraft. The <strong>Mujahideen</strong> had some British Blowpipe<br />

shoulder-fired air defense missiles, but <strong>the</strong>y were not effective.<br />

Pakistan sent some officers <strong>in</strong>to Zhawar dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g to take out<br />

attack<strong>in</strong>g aircraft with <strong>the</strong> British Blowpipe shoulder-fired missiles<br />

and show <strong>the</strong> <strong>Mujahideen</strong> how it was done. After climb<strong>in</strong>g a mounta<strong>in</strong><br />

and fir<strong>in</strong>g 13 Blowpipe missiles to no avail, a Pakistani capta<strong>in</strong> and his<br />

NCO were severely wounded by <strong>the</strong> attack<strong>in</strong>g aircraft. 18<br />

The DRA celebrated <strong>the</strong> fall of Zhawar as a major victory, but<br />

Zhawar was back <strong>in</strong> full operation with<strong>in</strong> weeks of <strong>the</strong> attack.<br />
