7.1.3 Physical capitalIn general, access to physical capital is low but, for most people this includes handhoes, pangas, cutlass, axe and in a few instances, bigger machinery like tractors (ordraft animals like donkeys). Poor households own significantly less hoes and pangas(Table 19).Table 19: Household agricultural implements and draft animals by incomegroups, Kilosa District, Tanzania, 2010Mean: Poor Medium Less poor Total Owned%rentedHoes* 2,8 3,51 3,86 3,39 99/1Cutlass 0,07 0,12 0,19 0,12 100/0Pangas* 1,22 1,36 1,54 1,37 98/2Axes 0,78 0,83 0,83 0,81 99/1Buffalo 0 0 0,02 0,01 100/0Tractor 0,02 0,02 0 0,01 0/100Maize mill 0 0,03 0,05 0,03 60/40N = 180, * indicates significantly differences between income groups (p < 0.05)Since less poor households have more land and can afford to hire labour, the toolsavailable thus explain these relationships. Hoes and pangas are two widely used toolsin the area where tilling and planting are done by hand. In this way it also shows thateven the more wealthy households cannot afford more effective agriculturalimplements such as the tractor or the plough. The tools are mostly owned by thehouseholds with an exemption of the maize mill, which are rented out by some fewhouseholds. In terms of location (see Table 20), the number of hand hoes issignificantly more predominant in Lunenzi than in the two other villages. SinceLunenzi also is the village with the highest worker/consumer ratio, this is no surprise.Table 20: Household agricultural implements and draft animals by location,Kilosa District, Tanzania, 2010Mean: Lunenzi Nyali Masugu Total Owned%rentedHoes* 4,46 3,32 2,51 3,39 99/1Cutlass 0,08 0,16 0,13 0,12 100/0Pangas 1,39 1,37 1,36 1,37 98/2Axes* 0,69 0,74 1 0,81 99/1Buffalo 0 0,02 0 0,01 100/0Tractor 0 0 0,03 0,01 0/100Maize mill 0,3 0,02 0,03 0,03 60/40N = 180, * indicates significantly difference between locations (p < 0.05)179
