outline the project as a whole with its aims and activities as well as mention theircollaborating partners.Thirdly we will focus on their work in Kilosa District and establish where they are inthe implementation process. These activities will be viewed in connection with ourfindings on REDD+ policies, the local context within which the communities createtheir livelihoods, and the livelihood outcomes and forest dependence <strong>of</strong> the three pilotvillages Nyali, Lunenzi and Masugu. In addition, local expectations and views will bepresented and taken into consideration. Through the help <strong>of</strong> relevant theory we willultimately be able to evaluate what might become challenging for the success <strong>of</strong> theproject. Finally, we will come with some concluding remarks as to whether or not wethink TFCG and MJUMITA will be able to reach their goal and purpose, and inparticular what effects it might have on the local communities in question and thedegree to which the 3Es are met.It is important to note that as the project is still in its implementation phase, manyactivities have not yet started, and in many instances progress reports on which andhow activities have been carried out have not yet been published. In such cases werefer to the most updated information we have and to our TFCG staff interviewswhich we carried out in December 2010.8.1 TFCG and MJUMITA8.1.1 Tanzania Forest Conservation Group (TFCG)TFCG was established in 1985 and they have more than 20 years <strong>of</strong> experience inworking with issues relating to forest conservation in Tanzania. They structurethemselves around five different programmes: (1) participatory forest management,(2) advocacy, (3) environmental education, (4) community development and (5)research. Through these activities they have been able to introduce “innovative andhigh-impact solutions” to the challenges Tanzanian forest face, as well as for thepeople that depend upon them. Over this period, this has been achieved throughactively advocating for improved forest management and reduced deforestation. It hasfor long been in the forefront <strong>of</strong> national awareness campaigns on forest conservation,including educational and communication components <strong>of</strong> the UNDP/GEFConservation and Management <strong>of</strong> the Eastern Arc Management project whichsupports institutional reform, strategy development, pilots, community-based219
