Bridges arerated on a scale of 0 to 100 by the American Association of State Highway andTransportation Officials (AASHTO) according to their type, lane widths, age, structuralconditions, and other factors. A higher score indicates a better condition, while a lowerscore indicates a poorer condition. Scores of 50 or lower qualify for replacement. Of the102 rated bridges on Cape Cod, only 9 are rated below 50. However, 58 bridges wererated between 50 and 80. As these bridges age, their ratings will decrease. Beingmindful of potential bridgework to be completed in the next 30 years will ensure thetimely replacement of poorly rated bridges.Cape Cod Regional Transportation Plan | August 2011Chapter 2.2: RoadwaysPage 97
