These reports include discussions on various vehicular accesstreatments and predictions of “Accident Reduction.”3.3.1.1 Modern Roundabouts v. Four-Way IntersectionsA roundabout is a type of circular intersection with specific design and traffic controlfeatures. These features include yield control of all entering traffic, channelizedapproaches, and appropriate geometric curvature to ensure that travel speeds on thecirculatory roadway are typically less than 20 mph. The decision to install a roundaboutas a safety improvement should be based on a demonstrated safety problem of a typesusceptible to correction by a roundabout. FHWA’s Roundabouts: an InformationalGuide, (FHWA –RD-00-067, June 2000) provides a review of the safety improvementsChapter 3: Safety Cape Cod Regional Transportation Plan | August 2011Page 286
afforded by roundabouts. The following figure shows that roundabouts have fewer injury accidentsper year than signalized intersections, particularly in rural areas.
