2.5.4 WATER TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTUREFIGURE 22: NAVIGATIONAL AIDS WITHIN THREE MILES OF CAPE CODA lighthouse is a structure, such as a tower, that gives a continuous orintermittent light signal to navigators. Cape Cod is famous for its manylighthouses and their unique towers. However, in addition to being aestheticallypleasing, these lights serve a vital purpose. Along with other navigational lightsand aids, they form the infrastructure that keeps water traffic on course and outof danger. There are ten active lighthouses on Cape Cod (Table 3). Most arelocated in the Outer Cape region. Additionally, there are six inactive lighthousestructures still in their original locations. Navigational lights and fog signals(bells, whistles, gongs, and horns) are generally located along the perimeter ofchannels and at dangerous areas. Due to its shoals and other hazards, themajority of Cape Cod’s navigational aids are located in Nantucket Sound (Table 4). Cape Cod has 43 fog signals and 72 navigational lights in total.Chapter 2.5: Water Transportation Cape Cod Regional Transportation Plan | August 2011Page 202
