The most important benefitof the SHSP is that statewide goals and safety programs are coordinated to mosteffectively reduce highway fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads.The SHSP provides a comprehensive framework, and specific goals and objectives, forreducing highway fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads.Since Safety is such an important goal of the RTP, it is important to recognize the linkbetween this chapter and the State’s 2006 “Strategic Highway Safety <strong>Plan</strong>” (SHSP). TheSHSP lists several “Emphasis Areas” including:Data Systems (focus on Crashes, Roadway, Medical, Vehicle Registration,Driver History, Citations).Infrastructure (focus on Lane Departure Crashes, Intersection Crashes)At-Risk Driver Behavior (focus on Occupant Protection, Speeding,Alcohol/Impaired Driving)Higher-Risk <strong>Transportation</strong> System Users (focus on Young Drivers, OlderDrivers, Pedestrians, Bicyclists, Motorcyclists)Public Education and Media (focus on Statewide Safety Marketing, Mediamessages, Public Awareness)Safety Program Management (focus on Process for Institutionalizing theSHSP)These Emphasis Areas are discussed in further detail below.
