Multiple connections should be considered to provide for access to both railtrails and destinations along the potential routes should be considered when selectingalignments. Routes that serve to connect multiple trip generators would serve toincrease the utilization of bicycling for utility trips and multiple connections wouldestablish a more complete route network in the region. A four foot shoulder is desirableto provide adequate operating space for a bicyclist while allowing motorists unimpededtravel within the adjacent lane.Project 5.3.5: Identify Regional Connections between Existing Paths andLocations with High Pedestrian TrafficProject Description – Sidewalks or shared-use paths should be provided to establishconnected and contiguous pedestrian access routes between the commercial tripgenerators, residential neighborhoods, and existing pedestrian facilities wherepedestrian traffic is currently high or for which there is significant latent demand.Pedestrian networks should be established on a regional basis to connect villages andtowns when density and proximity warrant.Preliminary Design Concepts – Depending upon traffic volumes, speeds, andlocation of pedestrian trip generators, sidewalks should be considered along both sides ofthe street. Appropriate marked crosswalks and signage, consistent with the roadwaygeometrics and existing traffic patterns should be installed at intersections where theCape Cod Regional Transportation Plan | August 2011Chapter 5: Bike & PedestrianPage 419
