3.2.4 YOUNGER DRIVER RECOMMENDATIONSRecommendations to accommodate younger driver safety issues are divided betweenresidents and visitors:Increased education for local young drivers.Additional enforcement and warnings during the busy traffic season to reach outto young visitor drivers.Develop and implement an advertising campaign and roadside signagereminding drivers that traffic and drunk driving laws are strictly enforced on<strong>Cape</strong> <strong>Cod</strong>.3.2.5 ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONSAdditional recommendations include:Better signage for visitors directing them to popular destinations (e.g., larger,well-located signs to direct patrons of the Hyannis <strong>Transportation</strong> Center mayimprove safety at the driveway on Route 28).Signage explaining the rotary “rules of the road” and similar information to beincluded in visitor brochures and <strong>Cape</strong>-related websites such as ‘Go <strong>Cape</strong> <strong>Cod</strong>:3.3 THE CAPE COD ROADWAYwww.gocapecod.orgThere are nearly 3,900 miles of roadways in Barnstable County. These include 608.5miles of Arterials and 238.9 miles of Collectors. The remaining 3,018.5 miles includedlocal roads and the many miles of unimproved ways. The typical posted speed limit onthe <strong>Cape</strong> is less than 40 miles per hour (mph) and, on average, the roadways carry 175%more traffic in July and August than they do in January and February.The character of <strong>Cape</strong> <strong>Cod</strong>’s rural roads includes narrow lanes and a typical speed limitof 35 mph. Most roads do not have shoulders and bicycles must often share the laneswith motorists. Many of the older roads evolved from Indian trails and stagecoachroutes. Roadway geometry is therefore less accommodating than current state andfederal standards. Included in the goals of this <strong>Plan</strong> is the preservation of the scenic andrural character of <strong>Cape</strong> <strong>Cod</strong>’s narrow, winding roads. However, this must beaccompanied by a program of enforcement and education especially for the drivers thatvisit the <strong>Cape</strong> in the summer. The following tables list crash rates for Routes 6, 6A, and28, respectively.
