mission as the original plan, using current data. By combining driveways, constructing interconnectionsbetween adjacent parcels, or eliminating excess driveways andunnecessary “wide-open” pavement, traffic flow and safety is improved.Encourage non-automobile travel of the corridor. Alternate travel modesshould be supported by development of non-automobile transportation facilities, education, and marketing. Using alternate transportation such as biking andwalking reduces the impacts on air quality, safety, and energy use associated withautomobile travel and enhances the Route 6A experience by reducing traffic.Develop flexible roadway standards. Allowing for narrower travel lanes canencourage lower travel speeds and enhance the safety of non-motorized travelsuch as walking or biking.Transportation Implementation RecommendationsThe following recommendations for implementation advance strategies to address trafficflow and safety along Route 6A, as well as support other CMP goals.IMPLEMENTATION RECOMMENDATION:Speed-management techniquesThe 1995 CMP recommended exploring “speed zoning” to address safety concerns onRoute 6A. Speed zoning is the process of (1) recording the speeds of vehicles on asegment of roadway and (2) setting the “appropriate” speed limits. Determination of thespeed limit usually is based on the speed at which 85 percent or few motorists travelalong that given segment of the road. The current speed zones on Route 6A vary, withchanges occurring over relatively short distances. Drivers frequently exceed the speedlimit; in many of the higher speed zones (speed limit 45 mph) this impacts the comfortand safety of pedestrians and bicyclists. The traditional method of establishing speed limits would likely result in higher speedlimits throughout the corridor, which would be inappropriate with the scenic bywaysprogram goals of accommodating a variety of roadway users (including pedestrians andChapter 7: Alternatives Cape Cod Regional Transportation Plan | August 2011Page 494
