The Cape CodLine used to continue all the way to Provincetown, with the Chatham Branch startingwest of Route 124 in Harwich. However, the tracks were dismantled and a portion of theright-of-way was converted into the Cape Cod Rail Trail, which serves bicycle users andrecreational purposes. Currently, however, the Cape Cod Line extends as far as Route134 in Dennis. This final segment of track is out of service, abandoned, and not usableby train. Vegetation has encroached upon the rail tracks, crossing signals have been leftin disrepair, and road crossings have been paved over (Figure 16). MassDOT owns theright-of-way and is negotiating a lease with the towns of Yarmouth and Dennis. PlansCape Cod Regional Transportation Plan | August 2011Chapter 2.4: RailPage 171
