should be undertaken to establish a preferred alignment. Mass DCR’s maintenanceresponsibility for the CCRT requires close coordination between the state and CCNS.Project 5.2.2: Wayfinding Signage and Pavement Markings on CCRTProject Description – With an estimated 400,000 users annually the Cape Cod RailTrail (CCRT) has the potential to serve as a significant alternative transportation facility, not merely a recreational route. Installation of consistent signage along the Cape CodRail Trail to include interpretive, directional, informational, and other wayfindingsignage is needed to both enhance the trail user experience as well as facilitate use of thetrail as a bicycle transportation corridor, especially by those that are not familiar withareas served by the facility. Additionally, improved pavement markings are needed, primarily at the 45 roadway crossings to enhance safety and communicate expectedbehaviors by both trail users and motorists at these conflict points. Motorist and trailuser expectations and actions are not consistent, in part due to trail and roadwaycrossing designs that are inadequate and design treatments that are inconsistent andoften don’t comply with the MUTCD (the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices)regulations or AASHTO guidelines.Preliminary Design Concepts – The specific signage design and placement has to bedetermined, and avoidance of visual clutter is needed, however the primary informationthat needs to be considered for signage includes:• Trail amenities including rest rooms & emergency services• Historic resources• Beaches• National Seashore attractions• Town centers and commercial destinations including restaurants, lodging, retailshopping, bike shops• Distance signage (to destinations)• Connections to intermodal transportation facilities including bus and ferryterminals• Connections to other bicycle facilities & bike routes• Communicating mobility issues for access by different users (including ADAissues)• Safety information such as sand and other surface hazardsCost Estimate – Complete signage at $18,400 per mile:• $405,000.00 for the existing CCRT• $129,000.00 for the Old Colony extensionRecommendations for Implementation – This approach will facilitate addressingthe multiple locations that will be enhanced or addressed over time and in a phasedmanner, but this project provides a uniform protocol and design standards so thatconsistency is ensured.Cape Cod Regional Transportation Plan | August 2011Chapter 5: Bike & PedestrianPage 401
