Theseclassifications identify bridges that are eligible for various federal and state funding. Abridge is considered structurally deficient if it is closed, restricted to light vehicles, orrequires immediate rehabilitation to remain open. Cape Cod has seven structurallydeficient bridges. Dennis is the town with the most structurally deficient bridges (seeprevious table). A bridge is considered functionally obsolete if it does not meet thecurrent standards for deck geometry, approach roadway alignment, clearance, or loadcarrying capacity. Cape Cod has 42 functionally obsolete bridges, with Barnstable havingthe most of any town (see previous table). Many of Cape Cod’s bridges are consideredfunctionally obsolete due to narrow lane widths or a low level of service. Several projectsare currently underway through the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) toaddress structurally deficient bridges on Cape Cod.
