equired on Old Queen Anne Road for a distance of 4000 feet to make final connectionsto Sam Ryder Road, the access road to Schoolhouse Pond.Preliminary Design Concepts – The extension should utilize current designguidelines for shared-use paths and rail-trails with a minimum 10’ paved trail width. Awider paved surface should be considered along segments that are envisioned to havehigher volumes of users. Current practices also consider separation of bicycle andpedestrian modes by providing a wider trail surface and designation of walking andbicycling lanes to make for a safer and more enjoyable environment along segmentswhere there is considerable mixing of bike and pedestrian traffic.Cost Estimate – Shared-use path, unit costs per mile along varying alignments:• Adjacent to roadway with utility relocation – $765,600.00• Along new alignment – $871,200.00• Existing corridor (minor grading/clearing) – $792,000.00• Along abandoned RR bed – $660,000.00On-road improvements, unit costs per mile:• Signing and striping – $10,560.00• Widening to add shoulders/bike lanes – $501,600.00Recommendations for Implementation – Landowner issues may present difficultyin acquiring the needed right of way for a trail alignment. Alternative alignments shouldbe investigated to determine the most feasible connection.Project 5.2.10: Connect Shining Sea Bikeway to Gifford StreetProject Description – This proposed connection has been conceived by the FalmouthBikeways Committee. The goal is to provide bicycle access to Gifford Street, a majornorth/south local collector connection Brick Kiln Road to Main Street (Route 28). Thereare a number of local roads that can be used as a bike route to facilitate this connectionincluding Pumping Station Road, Jones Road and Kathleen Lee Bates Road; thepreferred alternative. The most challenging constrain is the crossing of State HighwayRoute 28. The Falmouth Bikeways Committee has made inquiries to MassDOTregarding this location to in hopes to having a pedestrian bridge constructed to facilitatea safe and convenient crossing.Preliminary Design Concepts – The connection is envisioned to utilize local roadswith several possible options including Pumping Station Road, Jones Road, andKatherine Lee Bates Road which is the preferred alternative. Two primary design issuesentail identifying and designing a suitable crossing of Route 28, and access from thebikeway to Route 28 which may involve private property. Few streets provide a directroute from the bike way across Route 28 due to offset intersections. As a result a shortshared-use path spur may be necessary to provide a connection between the bikeway andRoute 28. Wayfinding signage should be installed along the selected route.Chapter 5: Bike & Pedestrian Cape Cod Regional Transportation Plan | August 2011Page 408
