FIGURE 34 - WEST YARMOUTH ROADCROSSING OF THE OLD TOWNHOUSE ROADTRAILFIGURE 35 - MEETINGHOUSE ROAD CROSSINGOF THE HARWICH-CHATHAM EXTENSION OFTHE CAPE COD RAIL TRAILBicycle paths on Cape Cod, with the exception of the Rail Trail and Shining Sea Bikepath, are generally too short, or the wrong location, to facilitate commuting. For example, theNauset Trail only conducts travelers from Route 6 to the Cape Cod National Seashore. The Forest Road Path does not continue all the way to the commercial activity on Route28. The key is to construct and connect paths in such a way as to link areas withresidential, commercial, and recreational uses. Otherwise, bicyclists will only be able touse bicycle paths as part of a larger bicycle route or for recreational purposes.Because bicycles are small and lightweight, they are very portable and easy to transferfrom mode to mode. Bus services, such as the CCRTA, Plymouth and Brockton, andPeter Pan / Bonanza Bus Lines, can accommodate cyclists with racks and storage areas. The Steamship Authority and other ferry services allow passengers to bring their bicyclesfor a fee. Special reservations can also be made with air carriers in order to transportbicycles. For this reason, bicycle transportation can help to connect users to other modesof transportation.5.2 BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN ROUTE PLANNING TOOLSA key component of Cape Cod Bikeways is to involve the public in identifying the “best”bicycle routes. The bikeways website includes links showing potential on-road bicycleroutes connecting major destinations on Cape Cod using Google's mapping service. Some non-roadway alternatives (such as the Cape Cod Canal multi-use path are notshown). The goal of establishing these routes is to provide for the "best" bicycle travelwithin, among, and through the attractive areas of the Cape while avoiding narrow andbusy roads such as Route 6A or Route 28.These alternatives provides direct access to major roads and do not require cyclists totravel more than about one and a half times the distance that would be traveled if thecyclist stayed on the major road. Additionally, the alternate route still provides ashowcase for the scenic and historic qualities of the area.Chapter 5: Bike & Pedestrian Cape Cod Regional Transportation Plan | August 2011Page 374
