to accommodate high levels of traffic safely. The levels of traffic between Dennis andOrleans are lower than those between Sandwich and Dennis, but still above what manyconsider the capacity of a two-lane highway with limited access and unpaved shoulders.The Route 6 interchanges are among the most dangerous intersections on Cape Cod. Onthe Outer-Cape, the intersection of Route 6 and Brackett Road is also an intersection ofsafety concern. Since January of 2007, there have been eleven fatal crashes on Route 6 –six on the limited access portion of the highway, and five on the Outer-Cape. Four of theOuter-Cape crashes occurred in Wellfleet, and the other occurred in Truro.Similarly, on the Outer Cape, many have sought some way to increase safety forpedestrians and cars along Route 6. In addition, the proliferation of curb cuts along thatsegment of the road has caused increased congestion and increased the potential forcrashes. Also, in the segment along the Canal, traffic tends to travel faster than theroadway geometry design speed. Safety issues are discussed in greater detail in anotherchapter of the RTP.CongestionTraffic flow along the corridor is reasonable in the winter but often operates poorly in thesummer. During peak travel periods in the summer it is not unusual for westboundtraffic to be stopped for several miles east of the Sagamore Bridge.
