SEVENTEENTH CENTURY ENGLISH COLONIAL LITERATURE<br />

The arm <strong>of</strong> esh didst make thy trust?<br />

Raise up thy thoughts above the skye<br />

That dunghill mists away may ie.<br />

Thou haft an house on high erect,<br />

Fram’d by that mighty Architect,<br />

With glory richly furnished,<br />

Stands permanent tho: this bee ed.<br />

’Its purchased, and paid for <strong>to</strong>o<br />

By him who hath enough <strong>to</strong> doe.<br />

A Prise so vast as is unknown,<br />

Yet, by his Gift, is made thine own.<br />

Ther’s wealth enough, I need no more;<br />

Farewell my Pelf, farewell my S<strong>to</strong>re.<br />

The world no longer let me Love,<br />

My hope and Treasure lyes Above.<br />

By nature Trees do rot when they are grown,<br />

<strong>An</strong>d Plumbs and Apples throughly ripe do fall,<br />

<strong>An</strong>d Corn and grass are in their season mown,<br />

<strong>An</strong>d time brings down what is both strong and tall.<br />

But plants new set <strong>to</strong> be eradicate,<br />

<strong>An</strong>d buds new blown <strong>to</strong> have so short a date,<br />

Is by his hand alone that guides nature and fate.<br />
